Frequently Asked Questions

Flying the Trike over Targhee Ski Resort

Discovery Flights

     Do I need a reservation?

Yes, all flights are done by reservation only. Please call or email us to check availability.

     What should I wear?

We provide flight suits to keep you warm and comfortable during your flight, so you can wear whatever is comfortable for the rest of your day. During the cooler months of spring and fall, we recommend you wear long pants and covered shoes. We also provide warm gloves and a helmet with a face shield and built in headset so you can comfortably communicate with your instructor.

How long will the flight last?

We currently offer a 20 minute and 40 minute introductory flight lesson, each having a full 20 or 40 minutes of flight time respectively. The actual time you should allow for each flight is about 10 minutes longer than the flight time to allow for taxing and warm-up.

     Do I need any experience?

You will be flying with an FAA certified flight instructor, and you do not need any previous experience. You can take the controls and with the guidance of your instructor you can learn what it takes to fly the weight shift control trike. Or you can let the instructor demonstrate the capabilities of the aircraft while you sit back and enjoy the flight.

How does the trike take off?

After a brief ground lesson you will climb into the trike buggy, where you are in a seated position and secured with aircraft seat belt. We taxi out to the runway under power, just like most small airplanes. After checking for traffic, we will smoothly accelerate down the runway until we lift off.

     How does the trike land?

After finding our way back to the airport your instructor will guide the trike in for a smooth landing back on the wheels. There is absolutely no effort required to take off or land a trike, allowing us to take students of almost any age and ability.

What age must you be to fly?

Because we take off and land on wheels, we can take a wide range of ages and people of all physical abilities. We've taken folks as young as 6 and as old as 90. The main determining factors are the person's size and ability to follow directions in flight. For young ones we want to be sure they have an interest and have the physical ability to fly the trike. For older students and those with disabilities the main requirement is being able to hold your upper body in an upright seated position.

Flight Training

How long does it take to learn?

Flying a trike is one of the easiest forms of aviation. Weight shift control tends to be very intuitive, and in many cases it's actually possible for a student to demonstrate basic control of the trike after only a few minutes of flying. However the skills and experience required to safely fly in a wide range of conditions take many hours of dedicated instruction. To fly most types of trikes the FAA requires you to hold a Sports Pilots License, which requires 30 hours of combined dual and solo flight. In reality most students should expect to fly 40-70 hours before they are ready to take the required tests for the Sport Pilots License. An alternative to the instruction required for a Sport Pilot License is to fly trikes that fall under the ultralight regulations, which do not require a license to operate. Please contact us to discuss flight training options.

     What is the FAA?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States is a national authority with powers to regulate all aspects of civil aviation. These include the construction and operation of airports, air traffic management, the certification of personnel and aircraft. Teton Hang Gliding's trikes are certified by the FAA as Special Light Sport Aircraft (S-LSA), and our instructors are FAA certified Sport Pilot Instructors in Weight Shift Control Aircraft. You can read more about Light Sport on the FAA's website at faa.gov.

How safe is flying a trike?

All of the Discovery Flights at Teton Hang Glidng are done with 2 people: you (the student) will fly with an instructor. Flying with a flight instructor is the safest way you can experience flight. Teton Hang Gliding's instructors will use their skills and expertise to make sure you always have a safe and enjoyable experience. Tens of thousands of trike flights happen all over the country and world every year. and Teton Hang Gliding uses some of the most proven, reliable, and modern equipment used in the sport.

How much does a trike cost?

The cost of trikes can vary greatly, with used single seat ultralight trikes starting around $5,000, and fully tricked out certified 2-place trikes costing over $100,000. The operating and maintenance costs can also vary depending on the type of trike and the amount of work the owner is willing to do. Overall, flying trikes is probably one of the most affordable forms of powered aviation.

What trike does Teton Hang Gliding fly?
